Wat ik elke dag log: 

- totale hoeveelheid slaap volgens de verschillende slaaptrackers (Oura, Sleep Cycle, Fitbit, iHealth) 

- hoeveelheid diepe slaap (eN3: estimated N3) volgens deze apps

- geluidsdruk (in Z-weging) aan het begin van de slaap

- geluidsdruk bij het ontwaken

- windrichting en windsnelheid voor het slapengaan en bij het ontwaken

- dezelfde informatie m.b.t. eventuele dutjes overdag

 

Niet verwerkt in onderstaande tabellen maar wel beschikbaar op de site: spectrogrammen van elke nacht, waarin het constant veranderende geluidsspectrum te zien is. De geluidsmetingen hebben dus betrekking op het geluidsspectrum (uitgedrukt in hertz) en de geluidsdruk (uitgedrukt in decibellen), waarbij ik voor dit laatste de voor windturbines relevante Z-weging toepas: dB(Z).

Ik ben zelf geen academicus. Wel iemand met een levenslange interesse in biologie, psychologie en neurowetenschap, en ik ben gediplomeerd drogist sinds 2001. Mijn vriendin is wel academicus (filosofie), en ik ben afkomstig uit een familie van academici (scheikunde en preventieve tandheelkunde). Ik luister graag naar hoorcolleges en raadpleeg geregeld sites als PubMed.

 

Mijn interesse in de fase van diepe slaap hangt samen met mijn interesse in het glymfatisch systeem en de voor spieren en gewrichten zo belangrijke afgifte van groeihormoon. Via mijn levenslange  interesse in meditatie en hersengolven ben ik ook al vele jaren bekend met brainwave entrainment (zie Wikipedia voor een prima introductie), het mechanisme dat mogelijk een rol speelt bij de beïnvloeding van delta-hersengolven (nodig voor de diepe slaap) door ritmische infrasone drukgolven, aangezien beide zich afspelen in het laagfrequente gebied van zo'n 0 tot 4,5 Hz. Ik beschouw dit alles slechts een vooronderzoek (pilot study). Doel is het onderzoek over te dragen aan een geïnteresseerde academicus of groep van academici, met betere apparatuur, meerdere proefpersonen, een hoger budget, en wellicht de huur of aanschaf van een eigen gebouw (slaaplaboratorium) in de Ardennen of bijvoorbeeld Luxemburg. Ik zou graag samenwerken met deskundigen als prof. dr. Rolf Fronczek (LUMG), prof. dr. Robbert Havekes (UMCG), prof. dr. Peter van Meerlo (RUG), Frits van den Berg (RUG), en het team van het Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (Radboud Universiteit).

Ik ben de logs gaan nummeren vanaf 7 januari, omdat ik vanaf 6 januari de Oura ring ben gaan dragen en ik daarmee de technische basis van dit vooronderzoek compleet had (meetmicrofoons, programma's etc.). Het onderzoek was toen al drie maanden aan de gang (oktober, november, december 2025), maar wat de apparatuur en methodologie betreft bevond het zich toen nog - bij nader inzien - in een experimentele fase. Log #1 verschijnt halverwege de pagina Slaaponderzoek vanaf 25 december.

 

Deze logs werkten toe naar het al in december geplande experiment in de Belgische Ardennen, dat van 31 maart t/m 6 januari zou gaan plaatsvinden. Doel van het "Ardennen-experiment" was mijn slaap in Bellingwolde (omgeven door Nederlandse en Duitse windparken) te vergelijken met mijn slaap in een windmolen-vrije omgeving. Het Ardennen-experiment - uitgevoerd op Camping du Pouhou nabij La Roche, met slechts 5 Nordex turbines op zo'n 16 km afstand - begint vanaf log #82 (de ochtend van 1 april), waarbij vooral logs #83, #84 en #85 belangrijk zijn, omdat ik die drie nachten in de afgelegen Mirador hut heb geslapen. De overige drie nachten (log #82, #86 en #87) sliep ik in de "Hut van Leon", waar het (vracht)verkeer tussen La Roche en Marche helaas duidelijk te horen was. De drie nachten in de Mirador hut voldeden beter aan wat ik oorspronkelijk voor ogen had, al was ook deze locatie door het intensieve vliegverkeer niet ideaal. Desalniettemin een zeer interessant resultaat, vooral de eerste nacht (log #83) waarin ik al mijn eerdere slaaprecords met een ruime marge verbrak: 105 minuten diepe slaap (volgens Oura) in plaats van de gebruikelijke 50 tot 85 minuten. Dit ondanks de lichte vorst die nacht. De Mirador hut heeft geen verwarming en is absoluut niet geïsoleerd: het is feitelijk een uitkijktoren met een bed er in. Het dak is van plexiglas: hartstikke leuk voor vogel- en sterrenkijkers, maar beslist geen buffer voor het geluid van de vliegtuigen. De hut bevindt zich op zo'n 100 meter afstand van de Pouhou, het kabbelende beekje dat door de camping slingert.

Ik heb zojuist log #91 ingevuld. Nog even en we hebben dus zo'n 100 nachten om met elkaar te vergelijken.

 

Vóór mijn vertrek naar de Ardennen had ik de gegevens al eens met elkaar vergeleken, maar er bleek geen correlatie te zijn tussen slaapkwaliteit en windsnelheid of geluidsdruk: harde wind had niet voorspelbaar een lage eN3-score ten gevolg, en weinig wind zorgde niet voorspelbaar voor een hoge score. ALS windparken de diepe slaap inderdaad onderdrukken of verstoren, dan doen zij dit waarschijnlijk ongeacht de windsnelheid, zolang de rotorbladen maar ronddraaien. Het Ardennen-experiment doet vermoeden dat afstand tot de windparken veel relevanter is, en met afstand doel ik dan op tenminste 10 kilometer, afhankelijk van om hoeveel turbines het gaat. In de provincies Groningen en Drenthe heb ik geen dorp gevonden waar het windmolengeluid niet meetbaar is. Ook in andere provincies waar ik afgelopen half jaar doorheen ben gereden, heb ik het infrasone geluid overal kunnen meten. Een reisje naar de Ardennen was daarom de enige manier om mijn hypothese te testen. Ik zal niet zeggen dat mijn hypothese bevestigd is, maar wel dat deze aannemelijker is geworden, en beslist vervolgonderzoek verdient, idealiter met EEG/PSG, in een beter geïsoleerd gebouw, en uiteraard met meer proefpersonen.

Op deze locatie (aan de rand van Bellingwolde, nabij de Duitse grens) ligt de algemene geluidsdruk in A-weging tussen de 36 en 38 dB(A). Wanneer de dB(Z) dus 57 dB is, dan gaat het om zo'n 20 dB dat door de A-weging wordt weggefilterd, in de praktijk bovenal het laagfrequente en infrasone (onhoorbare) geluid van de windparken, zoals duidelijk blijkt uit de spectrogrammen.

 

Ook in de Ardennen lag de algemene geluidsdruk in A-weging tussen de 37 en 38 dB(A). De 49 tot 50 dB(Z) die ik daar de eerste dagen mat, bestond dus voor circa 12 dB uit laagfrequent en infrasoon geluid. Hoger dan ik gehoopt had, maar alsnog een flinke verbetering ten opzichte van mijn metingen en slaapexperimenten op verschillende plekken in Groningen en Drenthe.

 

Op basis van de logbestanden t/m log #94 (vrijdag 10 april) heb ik zojuist de volgende berekeningen gemaakt:

 

Het gemiddelde van de 6 nachten Ardennen was 69 minuten N3 (middagdutjes niet meegerekend). Dat is 13 minuten langer dan het gemiddelde van 88 nachten Bellingwolde, want dat was 56 minuten N3.

 

Het gemiddelde van de 3 nachten Mirador (90 minuten, dutjes niet meegerekend) is 32 minuten langer dan het Bellingwolde gemiddelde.

 

Het slaaprecord in Bellingwolde was 92 minuten N3. Dat record verbrak ik in de Mirador hut met 13 minuten (want 105 minuten N3), of zelfs 17 minuten als we de N3 van het middagdutje meetellen (het totaal van die dag was immers 109 minuten N3).

 

Het een-na-hoogste record in Bellingwolde was 84 minuten, in de Mirador hut 87 minuten (of 91 minuten als we de 4 minuten van het dutje meerekenen), dus ook dat record heb ik er  geëvenaard.

 

Het twee-na-hoogste record in Bellingwolde was 80 minuten, en in de Mirador hut was dat 78 minuten, dus slechts 2 minuten eronder.

First night (of three) in the Mirador cabin. Airplanes still audible, but masked somewhat by the sound of the Pouhou brook. The Mirador cabin is further away from the road between La Roche and Marche, so the lorries and cars aren't as audible here. On this first night the temperature was about 0 degrees Celsius. Despite the cold, and also despite the Full Moon, a remarkably good sleep, especially according to Oura: 105 minutes of deep sleep, which is my personal record by a wide margin.

Third and final night in the Mirador cabin. Interesting: all three nights at the Mirador cabin I fell asleep at exactly 22:39, without planning it. In general my sleep times have been very regular lately.  Oura remarked this a few days later: "Looks like your sleep schedule and sleep balance are on point, congrats!" And for this particular night, still at the Mirador cabin: "Your Sleep Score was above your typical range last night. Reflect on what might have contributed to this improvement, and see if you can add it to your routine."

Final night in the Ardennes, again in the "Hut van Leon" with my girlfriend sleeping in another part of the cabin. Sound pressure level remarkably high: 56 dB(Z) rather than the 49 to 50 dB(Z) I measured when I arrived in the Ardennes. Only much later, on April 10, did I learn that there are actually five wind turbines at about 16 to 18 km distance, in Saint-Ode.
